No. Your acquaintance is 150% wrong about the perception of the U.S. at world stage. America is more respected than ever – now that a lot of allies have had their fair share of taste of the burden the U.S./the UK are known to shoulder up.

Bush and Cheney’s way of going around the world and banging heads like Alexander the Great or Napoleaon is not exactly the best way to wield power. If you do, you fall faster than your rise. And 911, Iraq and Afghanistan are examples of how some people could humbly pull some cheap ass-trick on you, and keep it going if your partners aren’t doing any of the lifting.

If your acquaintance want to go back to that type of policy, then i suggest looking far away from these borders.
